SPIRITUAL ENHANCEMENT

Qiyam means 'standing' and Qiyam al-Layl means 'standing in night'.  In the Islamic terminology, both terms refer to 'the voluntary night prayer, whose time extends from after Isha prayer until dawn'. Other common names for Qiyam al-Layl are Salaat ul-Layl(the night prayer), Tahajjud(from hajada meaning remained awake at night), Witr(odd-numbered; this term is also used to refer to the last one of three Raka'ah of Qiyam) and taraweeh(resting).

Theme

Why do we organize these spiritual retreats?  Originally the first retreat was held by a dear friend of mine several years ago.  Those who attended the first one were inspired and spiritually motivated by the topics as well as the speakers.   The bond that formed among us confirmed that we needed this type of environment as another means to foster personal inner growth as well as increased commitment to this deen.

Each year a different theme is chosen and the presentations are geared toward that.  Last year's theme was based on the Qur'an verse, "And my affair I leave it to Allah" (40:44)  We have many challenges in our daily life that may bring distress and anxiety. The best perspective from which to deal with those challenges is tawakul Allah, relying on Allah and His infinite Wisdom.  Not a stone is turned nor is a chlid born that Allah has not already decreed it to be so.

This tradition of bringing sisters together based on spiritual guidance is one step to healing.  We belong to a community of Allah conscious people and reinforcing the links that we share with one another will be a protection from despair and depression.  Along with a healthy regimine which includes pure food, pure thoughts and pure companionship, we are ensured a life of peace and calm.
